SAN ANTONIO – Entries from Bexar County citizens with physical or cognitive special needs will be received until midnight Saturday, Feb. 17, for the first “Sheriff for a Day” competition sponsored by Sheriff Javier Salazar, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, which since 2005 has been dedicated to helping people with special needs.

“As part of our 24-7-365 law-enforcement efforts, we reach out to many and varied segments of Bexar County to facilitate better understanding of the Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Salazar said.  “This is also a great opportunity to work with Gordon Hartman and his foundation that created unique Morgan’s Wonderland theme park, new Morgan’s Inspiration Island splash park and many other initiatives to uplift the special-needs community.”

Bexar County citizens with special needs are invited to submit an online entry of not more than 200 words on the topic, “Why I Want to be Sheriff for a Day.”  Deadline for entries to www.morganswonderland.com/get-involved/sheriff-for-a-day is midnight Feb. 17, 2018.

Judges chosen by The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation will review all entries received by the deadline and select three finalists, who will be introduced at the Bexar County Commissioners Court meeting Tuesday, Feb. 27.  In turn, Sheriff Salazar will select the winner and introduce that person at 10 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Morgan’s Wonderland.  At that time, the winner will be presented with a special badge, shirt and hat prior to an exhibition of Sheriff’s Office units and capabilities lasting until noon for all park guests.

These include the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, the Mobile Negotiations Command Vehicle, SWAT team members with a specialized vehicle known as “The Bear,” Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) officers and gear, a mounted patrol unit, a motorcycle unit, the Recruiting Team and display, and the honor guard.

“Sheriff Salazar has had a longstanding interest in and passion for individuals with special needs,” Hartman said.  “We’re grateful to him and the entire Sheriff’s Office for shining the spotlight on an often-underserved population in our midst.  Thanks to Sheriff Salazar and his staff, ‘Sheriff for a Day’ will create lasting memories for the lucky winner.”
